The Athletics broke a tight game apart with four runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Yankees, 5-1. Phil Garner walked to open the stanza and gave way on the paths to Matt Alexander, who took second on a sacrifice by Bert Campaneris and scored on a single by Bill North to break a 1-1 tie.

North advanced to second on a fumble of his hit by Rich Coggins and also scored when Fred Stanley threw wildly on an infield hit by Claudell Washington. A single by Gene Tenace drove in Washington. Tenace then counted the last run on a double by Sal Bando and a wild pitch. [The Sporting News]
