The Reds exploded with a six-run first inning to defeat the Pirates, 8-3. Johnny Bench hit a two-run homer and winning pitcher Fred Norman added a two-run single in the first as the Reds dealt the Bucs their ninth loss in 10 games. Pete Rose singled and also hit an RBI double in the burst. Norman notched his sixth straight victory and upped his career record at Riverfront Stadium to 23-6. [The Sporting News]
