Backed by four double plays, Mike Cuellar pitched the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the White Sox. Cuellar had a shutout in his grasp until two out in the ninth inning when Pat Kelly tripled and Jorge Orta singled for his third hit of the game.

The Orioles scored their first run off Wilbur Wood in the second on singles by Bobby Grich, Paul Blair and Elrod Hendricks. The deciding marker followed in the fifth on a pass to Ken Singleton, sacrifice by Tony Muser and single by Don Baylor. [The Sporting News]
