The Phillies were unable to hold a 5-0 lead and eventually lost to the Cubs, 7-6, when a botched pickoff play resulted in two runs in the seventh inning. After the Cubs wiped out their early deficit and tied the score, Johnny Oates put the Phillies ahead again with a homer in the sixth inning for his third RBI of the game.

The Cubs had Joe Wallis on third and Jose Cardenal on first with two out in the seventh when Oates tried to pick Cardenal off first. During the ensuing rundown, Wallis broke for the plate on a wild throw by Dave Cash. Cardonal advanced to third on the error and counted the winning run when Jerry Morales singled.
