Bill Travers, who was knocked out in the second inning of the previous day's game, returned to the mound and pitched the Brewers to a 7-3 victory for a split of a doubleheader with the Red Sox, who won the opener, 6-3. The Red Sox trailed in the first game, 2-0, before picking up a run on a double by Bernie Carbo in the sixth inning. Then in the seventh, Denny Doyle singled, took third on a single by Carl Yastrzemski and scored the tying run on a forceout by Fred Lynn. Carlton Fisk followed with a double, driving in Lynn with the go-ahead tally. Three more runs in the ninth clinched the verdict.

Travers gave up only three hits, including a homer by Jim Rice, in winning the nightcap. The Brewers took a 4-2 lead with a three-run homer by George Scott in the fifth and added three insurance runs in the eighth on doubles by Bill Sharp and Robin Yount, an error and pair of infield outs.
