It was just a matter of time for the Dodgers to be counted out in the West Divsion race and the kayo came when they lost to the Braves, 5-4, while the winning Reds defeated the Giants, 8-4. The Dodgers trailed the Braves until the ninth inning when they tied the score on singles by Lee Lacy and Ken McMullen around a balk by Elias Sosa.

In the Braves' half, a walk, single by Bruce Dal Canton and error by Lacy loaded the bases with two out. Marty Perez then killed off the Dodgers' last mathematical chance with a single that drove in pinch-runner Rod Gilbreath. [The Sporting News]
