Joe Wallis, rookie outfielder from St. Louis, turned on his hometown club with a pair of triples to pace the Cubs to a 7-5 victory over the Cardinals. Wallis' first triple, singles by Champ Summers and Jose Cardenal and an error by Reggie Smith on a throw to the plate produced two runs in the first inning.

The Cubs then erupted for four more in the third on a single by Don Kessinger, Wallis' second triple, another single by Cardenal and homer by Andre Thornton. Ken Reitz and Keith Hernandez hit homers for the Cardinals, Hernandez' blow coming as a pinch-hitter with two men on base in the fourth inning. The defeat knocked the third-place Cardinals 7½ games behind the Pirates. [The Sporting News]
