The Pirates clinched their fifth N. L. East title in six years with an 11-3 victory over the Phillies, the only remaining club with a mathematical chance to catch the front-runners. With Richie Zisk and Dave Parker each driving in four runs while Willie Stargell scored four, Pittsburgh put the game away with a five-run eighth, all runs scoring after two were out.

Parker hit a two-run homer in that frame, boosting his RBI total to 101. The Pirates held a 4-1 lead entering the seventh, but Dave Cash doubled home two runs for the Phils before the division champs opened up some daylight with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by Zisk and Parker.
