. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Yankees knocked the Orioles out of the East Division race by sweeping a doubleheader, 3-2 and 7-3, to give the title to the Red Sox. The first game was decided in 10 innings. Two of the Yankees' runs in the opener, including their winning marker, were forced home on passes with the bases loaded. Catfish Hunter gained his 23rd victory in the lidlifter and became the first pitcher since Bob Feller in 1946 to turn in 30 complete games in one season. He also struck out 12, matching his career high. The Orioles nicked Hunter for a run in the first inning on a double by Bobby Grich and single by Lee May, but Bobby Bonds led off the Yankees' half with a tying homer. Chris Chambliss doubled in the second and, after two walks loaded the bases, Bonds drew a pass from Mike Torrez to force in the run that sent the Yankees ahead. Brooks Robinson then tied the score with a homer in the seventh. However in the 10th, Chambliss singled and Graig Nettles walked, bringing Grant Jackson to the mound for the Orioles. Terry Whitfield, trying to sacrifice, beat out a bunt to load the bases. Dyar Miller came in to face Rick Dempsey and walked the pinch-hitter on a 3-2 count to force in the Yankees' winning run.

Doc Medich hurled the route for the Yankees in the nightcap and beat Mike Cuellar. The Orioles took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a bases-loaded single by Jim Northrup, but the Yankees rose up with a four-run rally in the seventh. Rick Bladt and Fred Stanley singled and Bonds walked to fill the sacks and chase Cuellar. After Paul Mitchell relieved, Sandy Alomar forced Bladt at the plate, but Roy White singled, driving in two runs. Bonds took third on the hit and White moved to second on the throw. Thurman Munson then drove them home with a single. Bonds capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
