Jerry Reuss helped himself to victory with a tie-breaking double in the fifth inning as the Pirates defeated the Cardinals, 4-2. The Pirates opened the game with two runs on a double by Rennie Stennett and homer by Al Oliver. The Cards came back with the tying pair in their half.

Luis Melendez singled and scored on a double by Hector Cruz, who took third on the throw to the plate and counted on an infield out by Ted Simmons, whose RBI was his 100th of the season. In the Pirates' fifth, Frank Taveras walked and scored on Reuss' double. Reuss then crossed the plate himself on a single by Stennett. [The Sporting News]
