The Orioles erupted for five runs in the eighth inning to give pitcher Ken Holtzman the first victory in his new uniform. Tommy Harper got a pinch single off reliever Tom House to begin the big frame, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored the tying run on Paul Blair's double.

Ken Singleton's single moved Blair to third and brought Jim Willoughby to the mound. He was greeted by Lee May's single that scored Blair and gave the home team the lead. A single by Bobby Grich, Tony Muser's double and Brooks Robinson's sacrifice fly added three more tallies. [The Sporting News]
