Jerry Morales crossed up the St. Louis strategy with a single up the middle in the seventh inning to give the Cubs a 4-3 decision over the Cardinals. With runners on second and third and two out, the Cards elected to pass Bill Madlock intentionally and pitch to Morales. His bingle snapped a 2-2 tie. The Cards lost a chance to tie in the ninth when Hector Cruz doubled home a run with one out but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple. [The Sporting News]
