Phil Garner smashed a double and triple, drove in two runs and scored another to pace the A's to a 6-2 victory over the Angels. The A's second baseman broke open the pitching duel by doubling home two runs in the fifth inning for the only hit off Nolan Ryan.

The two-base hit followed walks to Sal Bando and Billy Williams. Garner then ignited a three-run rally in the eighth with a triple off rookie Paul Hartzell's first major league pitch and scored on Bert Campaneris' single. [The Sporting News]
