Playing before 44,818, a record opening-day crowd for Wrigley Field, the Cubs scored in the ninth inning on a triple by Manny Trillo and single by Rick Monday to defeat the Mets, 5-4. After Trillo's triple, the Mets issued two intentional passes to load the bases and retired Tim Hosley on a pop-up, but Monday lifted the winning single into short center. [The Sporting News]
