Southpaw Steve Barr, obtained from the Red Sox in the Fergie Jenkins deal, allowed only four hits and pitched the Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. Juan Beniquez, also obtained from the Red Sox, started things going in the first inning when he singled and scored from first base on a long single by Mike Hargrove.

A walk, single by Jeff Burroughs and grounder by Roy Howell added a second run. Jim Sundberg homered in the second before Sal Bando saved the A's from being shutout with a circuit clout in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
