Playing before his hometown fans for the first time, Doc Medich gained his first N. L. victory, pitching the Pirates past the Mets, 3-1. "This was more than a ball game for me," Medich said. "So many of them (the fans at the game) watched me grow up and play baseball around here."

The Mets' only run was a homer by John Milner in the fourth inning, but the Pirates promptly came back with two runs in their half on a pass to Willie Stargell, double by Richie Zisk and single by Dave Parker. Another single by Parker and double by Frank Taveras added a run in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
