The relief work of Tippy Martinez, Dick Tidrow and Sparky Lyle, who allowed only four singles in the last 6 2/3 innings, enabled the Yankees to defeat the White Sox, 5-4. Dock Ellis, who started for the Yankees and was staked to a 3-0 lead, was knocked out in the third inning when the White Sox rallied for four runs.
