Johnny Bench, who entered the game batting only .140, gave signs of breaking out of his slump by hitting a single and two doubles as the Reds defeated the Phillies, 7-3. The Reds knocked out Tom Underwood in the first inning, scoring five runs, including two on Bench's first double of the game.
