Doug Clarey, who was brought up as infield insurance because of an injury to Mike Tyson, smashed a two-run homer in the 16th inning to provide the Cardinals with a 4-2 victory over the Giants. Clarey, 22, was slated to join St. Petersburg (Florida State) before Tyson was hurt. He had batted only once before for the Cards and the homer represented his first major league hit. It also produced the first major league victory for Mike Proly, the fifth of six pitchers used by the Cardinals.
