Although forced to call on two relief pitchers in the ninth inning, the Pirates emerged with a 4-3 victory over the Padres. Dave Parker and Rennie Stennett hit homers for the Pirates. Jim Rooker, who started, allowed only two hits until being lifted in the ninth when Merv Rettenmund singled. Ramon Hernandez, who relieved, yielded a single by Jerry Turner and sacrifice fly by Tito Fuentes before giving way to Bob Moose, who gave up a sacrifice fly by Doug Rader and then retired Dave Winfield to end the game.
