Jose Cardenal collected six hits in seven trips in the opener and, after starting the nightcap on the bench, returned to action with one more hit in two at-bats as the Cubs swept a pair of overtime games from the Giants, each by the score of 6-5. In the first game, Cardenal hit four singles, a double and a homer. The single for his sixth hit scored Dave Rosello with two out in the 14th inning and brought the Cubs their victory.

In the nightcap, the Cubs loaded the bases in the 11th on two singles around a walk. Randy Hundley then batted for Darold Knowles and hit a sacrifice fly to complete the Cubs' sweep. [The Sporting News]
