Held hitless for eight innings, the Royals broke Rudy May's spell in the ninth and then defeated the Yankees in the 11th, 2-1. Amos Otis ended May's no-hit bid with a double to open the ninth.

The Yankees, who were leading, 1-0, then brought in Sparky Lyle, but an infield out and sacrifice fly by John Mayberry enabled the Royals to tie the score. In the 11th, Jim Wohlford singled, Amos Otis walked, George Brett sacrificed and Wohlford beat the throw home when Mayberry grounded to first baseman Chris Chambliss. [The Sporting News]
