A pair of four-run innings enabled the Phillies gain an 8-2 victory over the Braves, who went down to their seventh straight defeat. In the second, the Phillies benefited from the wildness of Andy Messersmith, loading the bases on two walks around a single by Jay Johnstone.

Messersmith then passed Terry Harmon to force in one run and uncorked a wild pitch to allow another to score before Mike Schmidt doubled to drive in two more runs. In the ninth, the Phillies' final four counted on run-scoring singles by Tommy Hutton and Ollie Brown, an error and a sacrifice fly by Garry Maddox. [The Sporting News]
