With two out in the ninth inning, Alan Ashby batted in a pair of runs with a single to give the Indians a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. Rico Carty drew a walk from Rollie Fingers to start the stanza and, after one out, George Hendrick beat out an infield hit. Charlie Spikes flied out, but Ashby came through with his single driving in pinch runner Ron Pruitt from second and Hendrick, who put on all his speed and raced home from first on the two-out hit.
