Tied in a duel with Catfish Hunter, 4-4, Nolan Ryan suddenly folded in the eighth inning when the Yankees exploded for six runs to defeat the Angels, 10-4. The Yankees built up a 4-0 lead with the aid of a two-run homer by Oscar Gamble, but the Angels rallied to tie the score in the sixth, three runs counting on a circuit clout by Rusty Torres. However in the eighth, Mickey Rivers and Thurman Munson each came through with two-run singles as the Yankees knocked out Ryan and handed the Angels their ninth defeat in the last 11 games.
