Catching the Yankees off guard, Sal Bando raced from first base to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning to bring a 4-3 victory to the Athletics. Bando walked and when Larry Lintz bunted, the Yankees left third base unprotected.

Catfish Hunter raced over to cover but arrived too late to catch Bando. Bert Campaneris then sent Bando home with a sacrifice fly. The A's victory over Hunter was their first in five decisions with their former teammate. [The Sporting News]
