Shattering one of baseball's theories to smithereens, Rusty Staub smashed a three-run homer in the eighth inning to power the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Yankees. With one away in the eighth, Ron LeFlore singled and stole second, but was out at third on a grounder by Mickey Stanley, who reached second on the play. With Rudy May on the mound, the Yankees passed Willie Horton intentionally, electing to let their southpaw pitch to Staub, who bats lefthanded, but the Tigers' slugger proved that move was a mistake with a long homer on a 2-and-2 pitch.
