Santo Alcala, the Reds' 6-6 rookie righthander from the Dominican Republic, turned in his first complete major league game and second victory, shutting out the Mets, 2-0. For the second time in succession, the Mets failed to score for Tom Seaver, who lost his last previous start to the Padres, 4-0.

The Reds counted both their runs in the second inning. Dan Driessen walked, took third on a single by Tony Perez and scored on the front end of a double steal. One out later, Dave Concepcion tripled for the second tally. [The Sporting News]
