The Giants' unsuccessful attempt to complete a double play in the 11th inning resulted in a 7-6 loss to the Padres when Dave Winfield scored the winning run from second base. The Giants built up a 6-0 lead before the Padres battled back, tying the score on a two-run pinch-homer by Merv Rettenmund in the ninth.

Winfield doubled with one away in the 11th and Doug Rader walked. When Fred Kendall hit a grounder for a forceout at second, the Giants tried for the DP, but Kendall beat the throw to first while Winfield, putting on the speed, raced home from second on the play. [The Sporting News]
