Mike Tyson and Willie Crawford homered for the Cardinals consecutively in the third inning. Richie Zisk, who doubled a run home for the Pirates in the first, started their comeback with a homer in the eighth, with another run following on four walks.

In the ninth, two more walks and a double by Zisk accounted for the first tally in the rally. After another run scored on an infield out, Manny Sanguillen walked and Rennie Stennett doubled to tie the score, but Sanguillen was thrown out at the plate.
