In his first major league at bat since being recalled from Syracuse (International), Kerry Dineen singled home the decisive run in the 12th inning as the Yankees edged the Red Sox, 6-5. The winning hit came after Carlos May reached first base on Denny Doyle's error and Graig Nettles singled and stole second.

The Yankees had tied game in the ninth on Roy White's sacrifice fly after Otto Velez doubled and pinch-runner Sandy Alomar moved to third on a fly ball by Willie Randolph. Sparky Lyle, making his 500th major league appearance, gained the victory with 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. [The Sporting News]
