Garry Maddox hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Steve Carlton pitched an eight-hitter as the Phillies defeated the Cardinals, 2-1, for their sixth straight victory. Maddox followed a walk to Ollie Brown with his homer to help Carlton notch his fourth straight triumph. The Cardinals scored in the ninth on singles by Reggie Smith and Mike Anderson and a double by Hector Cruz. [The Sporting News]
