Frank Tanana fired a six-hitter and struck out 10 as the Angels downed the Rangers, 5-1. The Angels broke the game open with a three-run seventh inning. Bobby Bonds began the rally with a single. After Joe Lahoud walked, both runners advanced on Bill Singer's wild pitch.

Bonds scored on Bill Melton's infield grounder and Lahoud scored on a single by Andy Etchebarren. After Steve Hargan relieved, Dave Chalk walked and Ron Jackson added an RBI single. Tanana lost the shutout on ninth-inning singles by Gene Clines, Ken Pape and Toby Harrah. [The Sporting News]
