Mario Mendoza's sacrifice fly in the 16th inning gave the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Willie Stargell and Richie Zisk started the final rally with singles and Bill Robinson sacrificed the runners to second and third base. After Duffy Dyer was intentionally walked, Mendoza, who had entered in the 10th after Frank Taveras was lifted for a pinch-hitter, hit Paul Reuschel's second pitch to left field.

The Pirates had tied the score at 3-3 in the seventh on Zisk's home run. Bob Moose gained his first victory in 12 appearances and has not allowed an earned run in 22 1/3 innings. [The Sporting News]
