Mario Mendoza's sacrifice fly in the 16th inning gave the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Willie Stargell and Richie Zisk started the final rally with singles and Bill Robinson sacrificed the runners to second and third base. After Duffy Dyer was intentionally walked, Mendoza, who had entered in the 10th after Frank Taveras was lifted for a pinch-hitter, hit Paul Reuschel's second pitch to left field.
