Pat Zachry notched his third straight victory as the Reds edged the Padres, 3-2. The Reds scored three runs in the third inning on singles by Ken Griffey and Johnny Bench, an RBI single by Tony Perez and two-run double by George Foster.

The Padres scored in the second on a Dave Winfield double and Doug Rader single and in the sixth on a double by Willie McCovey and single by Rader, who lashed out three hits. Loser Alan Foster was making his first pitching start in almost a year, since June 1, 1975. [The Sporting News]
