Reggie Smith hit three home runs and drove in five runs as the Cardinals defeated the Phillies, 7-6, to end the Phils' six-game winning streak. Smith's third blow came off Tug McGraw to break a 6-6 tie in the ninth inning. Smith connected his previous two times at bat, with two on off Jim Kaat in the fifth and with nobody on base off Ron Reed in the seventh. Smith also made a sensational catch in the ninth inning.

Don Kessinger, who had made two fielding gems, made a diving catch on a liner by Garry Maddox to end the game and give Al Hrabosky his first victory of the season. Dick Allen's two-run shot, his first homer of the season, highlighted a four-run fifth. [The Sporting News]
