With Mike Marshall failing in relief, the Reds rallied for three runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Dodgers, 6-5. The Dodgers, who had a homer by Steve Garvey, held a 5-2 lead before Tony Perez cut into their margin with a circuit clout in the eighth.

Dave Concepcion opened the ninth with a single to chase Rick Rhoden. After Marshall relieved, the Reds put over their winning runs on a single by Cesar Geronimo, sacrifice by Ed Armbrister, infield out by Pete Rose, triple by Ken Griffey and single by Joe Morgan. [The Sporting News]
