Jim Kaat held the Cubs to six hits and hit the 15th homer of his major league career in pitching the Phillies to a 4-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader after the Cubs took the opener, 7-5. Kaat's homer in the fourth inning was his first in the National League.

Run-scoring singles by Mick Kelleher and winning pitcher Rick Reuschel helped the Cubs take a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning of the opener and they scored three more in the eighth on singles by Bill Madlock, Larry Biittner and Manny Trillo, a wild pitch by Tug McGraw and throwing errors by Larry Bowa and Dick Allen.
