The Mets blasted Jerry Reuss and the Pirates, 13-2, in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Pirates bounced back to win the second game, 2-1, on the five-hit pitching of Doc Medich. Mike Phillips and Wayne Garrett each drove in three runs to support Jon Matlack's five-hitter in the opener.

Duffy Dyer's second homer of the season, in the second inning, proved decisive in the nightcap. Ron Hodges' two-out homer in the ninth spoiled Medich's shutout bid. [The Sporting News]
