A match-up between Randy Jones and Tom Seaver brought out a crowd of 42,972, who saw the Padres' lefthander defeat the Mets' ace righthander, 3-0. The victory was the seventh in a row for Jones, bringing his season's record to 11-2.

The Padres put together singles by Fred Kendall, Enzo Hernandez and Tito Fuentes for their initial run in the fifth inning.
