Going into the eighth inning on the short end of a 5-2 score, the Athletics erupted for six runs and defeated the Red Sox, 8-5. A single by Bert Campaneris, double by Don Baylor and single by Joe Rudi produced the first two runs in the rally.

After Matt Alexander, running for Rudi, was thrown out stealing, the A's resumed their attack with a double by Sal Bando, who scored on a two-base throwing error by Steve Dillard. Following an intentional pass to Billy Williams, Phil Garner doubled to drive in one run and Tim Hosley also doubled to add the final pair of tallies. [The Sporting News]
