Claudell Washington, who entered the game with a .217 average, smashed a homer and single, driving in four runs, to lead the Athletics to a 4-1 win over the Red Sox. Paul Mitchell posted the decision on a three-hitter.

Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers, whom A's owner Charlie Finley had sold to the Red Sox, practiced before the game but then changed into street clothes because Commissioner Bowie Kuhn had ordered a hearing on the deal to be held in New York June 17. [The Sporting News]
