. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Mets extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 9-4 victory in the opener of a doubleheader before being stopped by the Cubs in the nightcap, 4-2. The Mets' streak was their longest since 1972. Mike Phillips, Bud Harrelson and reliever Skip Lockwood, who replaced winner Craig Swan in the seventh inning, each drove in two runs for the Mets in the first game. Rick Monday hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, who suffered their ninth straight defeat.

Breaking their losing streak in the second game, the Cubs scored two runs in the fourth inning on a single by Mick Kelleher and added an unearned pair in the seventh for their victory. Kelleher walked in the seventh and when Ray Burris bunted, Mickey Lolich threw the ball over the head of first baseman Ed Kranepool. Right fielder Dave Kingman retrieved the ball and followed with a wild throw to the plate, allowing both runners to score. [The Sporting News]
