Although admitting he was "a little shaky and lost my rhythm a couple of times," Randy Jones gained his 16th victory for the Padres, beating the Cubs, 6-3, and setting an N. L. record for most games won before an All-Star break. The Padres clinched the decision for Jones with four runs in the third inning, the first three tallies coming on singles by Johnny Grubb, Tito Fuentes, Dave Winfield and Mike Ivie.
