A three-run double by Jay Johnstone in the first game and three RBIs by Bob Boone in the second game helped the Phillies sweep over the Padres in a doubleheader, 5-0 and 4-2. Johnstone hit his bases-loaded double in the first inning of the opener and Steve Carlton took it from there to hurl the shutout. The lefthander also struck out five to bring his career total to 2,000.

In the nightcap, after plating a run with a double in the second inning, Boone hit an inside-the-park homer with Garry Maddox on base in the sixth. Jim Lonborg, who was the winner, recorded his 11th victory. [The Sporting News]
