Walter Alston chalked up his 2,000th victory as manager of the Dodgers and unbeaten Rick Rhoden extended his personal winning streak to nine games by defeating the Cubs, 5-4. Rhoden got off to a shaky start, giving up all of the Cubs' runs in the first inning, but allowed only three singles the rest of the way.

Rhoden helped overcome his handicap by rapping two singles, scoring one run and driving in two. In the fourth, with the Dodgers trailing, 4-3, Rhoden singled with the bases loaded, accounting for the tying and winning run. [The Sporting News]
