A six-run explosion in the fifth inning helped the Reds outlast the Pirates, 9-8. The Reds trailed, 3-1, when Tony Perez and Cesar Geronimo opened the fifth with singles. Dave Concepcion bunted and when Doc Medich threw wildly, one run scored. Mike Lum batted for Don Gullett and tripled to drive in two tallies.

Ed Armbrister, running for Lum, beat the throw home on a grounder by Ken Griffey before Joe Morgan came to the plate and hit a two-run homer. The Reds picked up a run in each of the next two innings before the Pirates fell short with rallies that included a homer by Bob Robertson with a man on base. [The Sporting News]
