When the Dodgers missed a rundown play in the ninth inning, Mike Schmidt raced home to bring a 2-1 victory to the Phillies. Dick Allen homered for the Phillies' other run. Steve Garvey drove in Bill Buckner with the tying tally in the sixth but then was somewhat of a goat in the ninth.

Schmidt was hit by a pitch and took third on a single by Greg Luzinski. Jerry Martin ran for Luzinski. Tommy Hutton grounded to Garvey, who stepped on first to retire the batter and then tried to run down Martin. However, Martin evaded the tag and returned to first safely as Schmidt scored the winning run from third. [The Sporting News]
