Chris Knapp pitched a four-hitter for the rookie's first major league victory and Bart Johnson followed with a six-hit shutout as the White Sox defeated the Tigers in a twi-night doubleheader, 4-1 and 3-0. Lamar Johnson backed Knapp's hurling in the opener by driving in two runs with a sacrifice fly and single, but Jorge Orta was stopped on his 17-game hitting streak, drawing the collar in four trips. In the nightcap, the White Sox scored all their runs in the fourth inning on a single by Orta, a stolen base, singles by Bill Stein and Kevin Bell and a triple by Bucky Dent. [The Sporting News] |
