The Phillies scored three runs in the first inning and proceeded to defeat the Pirates, 3-0, behind the pitching of starter Tom Underwood and reliever Ron Reed. In the first, Larry Bowa singled, stole second and scored on a single by Greg Luzinski.

Dick Allen followed with a single and Jay Johnstone then doubled to drive in Luzinski and Allen. Reed replaced Underwood after Willie Stargell singled in the ninth and picked up his seventh save by striking out Bill Robinson and inducing Richie Zisk to ground into a double play.
